Silicon Nitride Degassing Rotor & Shaft for Aluminum
SF-Foundry supplies silicon nitride degassing rotor and shaft assemblies for aluminum melt treatment and rotary degassing applications.
Both the rotor head and rotor shaft are made of silicon nitride (Si₃N₄). The assembly is designed for use with inert gas, such as nitrogen or argon, in suitable aluminum melting and holding furnace systems.
Custom rotor dimensions, shaft length, gas passage and connection configurations can be manufactured according to your existing degassing equipment.
Send us your existing rotor drawing, dimensions or photos for a suitable quotation.
- What Is a Silicon Nitride Degassing Rotor?
A silicon nitride degassing rotor is a ceramic component used in rotary degassing systems for molten aluminum.
The rotor is connected to a rotary drive system and immersed into the molten aluminum. An inert gas is supplied through the shaft while the rotor rotates, dispersing the gas into the melt.
The gas bubbles support the removal of dissolved hydrogen and the reduction of non-metallic inclusions during the melt treatment process. The actual treatment result depends on the complete degassing process, including gas flow, rotation, immersion depth, treatment time and molten metal conditions.
Product Configuration
- Rotor head: Silicon Nitride (Si₃N₄)
- Rotor shaft: Silicon Nitride (Si₃N₄)
- Gas: Nitrogen or Argon, according to the process
- Application: Rotary degassing of molten aluminum
How Does the Degassing Rotor Work?
The operating process can be summarized as follows:
1. Installation
The silicon nitride rotor and shaft are installed on the rotary drive system.
2. Immersion
The rotor is lowered to the required position below the surface of the molten aluminum.
3. Inert Gas Supply
Nitrogen or argon is introduced through the internal passage of the shaft.
4. Gas Dispersion
The rotating rotor disperses the inert gas into the molten aluminum.
5. Melt Treatment
The dispersed gas supports hydrogen removal and melt cleaning as part of the overall degassing process.
6. Withdrawal
After treatment, the rotor is removed from the molten metal according to the operating procedure.
The rotor geometry, immersion depth, gas flow and rotation conditions should be selected according to the specific furnace and degassing system.
Why Use Silicon Nitride for the Rotor and Shaft?
Silicon nitride is widely used for high-temperature ceramic components in non-ferrous metal processing.
Thermal Shock Resistance
The rotor is repeatedly exposed to high-temperature molten aluminum during insertion, operation and withdrawal. Silicon nitride offers good thermal shock resistance for this type of cyclic service.
Resistance to Molten Aluminum
Silicon nitride is used in aluminum-contact ceramic components because of its suitability for molten aluminum environments.
Oxidation Resistance
Silicon nitride is a non-carbon ceramic material and does not have the same oxidation behavior as graphite when exposed to high-temperature oxidizing conditions.
Complete Si₃N₄ Rotor and Shaft
For this product configuration, both the immersed rotor head and shaft are made of silicon nitride rather than using a ceramic rotor head combined with a different shaft material.

Silicon Nitride Rotor & Shaft Construction
The rotor assembly can be manufactured according to the customer’s existing equipment.
Key dimensions may include:
- Rotor head diameter
- Rotor head thickness
- Shaft diameter
- Overall shaft length
- Immersion length
- Internal gas passage
- Rotor head configuration
- Connection dimensions
- Required dimensional tolerances
The rotor head geometry can also be adapted to the customer’s degassing system and process requirements.
Customized Rotor Designs
Depending on the equipment, different rotor head configurations may be available, including:
- Multi-vane designs
- Disc-type designs
- Grooved designs
- Other customized configurations
The appropriate geometry should be selected according to the furnace, melt volume, gas flow and rotary equipment rather than by rotor diameter alone.
Applications
Silicon nitride degassing rotor and shaft assemblies can be used in:
- Aluminum melting furnaces
- Aluminum holding furnaces
- Aluminum alloy melt treatment systems
- Rotary degassing equipment
- Aluminum foundry melt treatment
- Aluminum casting production lines
The rotor is intended for use as part of a complete rotary degassing system rather than as a standalone filtration component.
How to Select the Right Degassing Rotor
A suitable rotor must match the mechanical, thermal and operating requirements of the existing equipment.
1. Check the Rotor Dimensions
Confirm the required rotor diameter, thickness and overall dimensions.
2. Check the Shaft Dimensions
The shaft diameter and length must match the equipment and required immersion depth.
3. Check the Connection
The drive-side connection must be compatible with the existing rotary drive system.
4. Check the Gas Passage
The internal gas passage should match the customer’s gas supply and rotor design.
5. Consider Operating Conditions
Important operating parameters include:
- Molten aluminum temperature
- Melt volume
- Rotation conditions
- Gas type
- Gas flow
- Immersion depth
- Treatment time
These conditions should be considered when selecting the rotor configuration and dimensions.
Custom Silicon Nitride Degassing Rotor & Shaft
Different aluminum foundries use different rotary degassing machines, so a universal rotor size is not suitable for every installation.
We can manufacture silicon nitride rotor and shaft assemblies according to customer requirements, including:
- Rotor diameter
- Rotor thickness
- Shaft diameter
- Shaft length
- Immersion length
- Gas passage
- Rotor geometry
- Connection configuration
- Dimensional requirements
Replacing an Existing Rotor
If you are currently using another rotor material or an existing rotor assembly, you can send us:
- Existing rotor photos
- Rotor dimensions
- Shaft dimensions
- Connection dimensions
- Equipment model
- Existing product drawing
We can review the existing configuration and determine the appropriate silicon nitride rotor and shaft dimensions.

Yes. For this product configuration, both the rotor head and rotor shaft are made of silicon nitride (Si₃N₄).
Yes. It is designed for rotary degassing and melt treatment applications in aluminum foundries and suitable aluminum melting or holding furnace systems.
Nitrogen and argon are commonly used inert gases for aluminum melt treatment. The appropriate gas depends on the customer’s process and equipment.
A silicon nitride rotor and shaft assembly can be evaluated as an alternative to an existing graphite assembly. The replacement must be checked against the existing rotor dimensions, connection, gas passage and operating conditions.
Yes. Rotor diameter, shaft length, shaft diameter, rotor configuration, gas passage and connection dimensions can be manufactured according to customer requirements.
There is no universal service-life value. Actual service life depends on molten metal temperature, thermal cycling, rotation conditions, gas flow, immersion and withdrawal practices, alloy chemistry and rotor design.
Please send us your equipment and existing rotor information. We can evaluate whether a separate rotor head or a complete rotor and shaft assembly is appropriate for your application.
